Me: I find it weird when fans of a long running franchise complain about characterisation because when a story's so old it's been around for literal generations inevitably there's gonna be variations in how characters are written. Comics change hands every few years, different decisions are made for movies, shows, cartoons, videogames. Even if we're just talking about comics the older companies have long been making random aus of their main properties where the setting changes so drastically the characterisation has to change too or the story doesn't work at all. One writer may create two completely separate versions of one character and have them be the same person in appearance and name only. Sure, everybody's got a preference for what they'd rather see, but saying someone is acting "out of character" when there were already a dozen versions of that character before you were born feels kinda pointless.
Also me: if one more person misinterprets my blorbos I'm gonna personally drown them in a vat of baked beans.
#long post#this reads like a shitpost but it's a genuinely very confusing cognitive dissonance to have#I've seen people complain that figures in a certain popular fanmade webcomic are out of character and I'm like ''how?''#''Out of character for which version of them? Is the difference so distinct it matters that much?''#But I see someone say they don't like my fave because of a very specific percetpion they have of the character#based on a whole lot of generalisations and some canon moments they don't understand aren't representative of their principles and traits#and I'm ready to write a full fuckin essay#10 000 words 1.5 spaced harvard referencing included#it's...weird

Sleep Token Survey: Results and Essay are finally here!
A few months ago I sent out a survey for Sleep Token fans focused around how the band's anonymity, marketing and approach to their music is perceived by the audience. I'm extremely grateful to all 391 of you (!!) who took the time to fill out this survey, this was seriously a great help for me when writing my essay
Due to strikes and various other ongoing interruptions at my college, it took some time for everything to get marked, but I can now happily say that since I'm no longer at risk of being accused of plagiarising my own work by publishing it online, I can now share the essay and results with you all!
(I wholeheartedly respect the privacy of the band members, so while it discusses the topic of anonymity, this essay has no mention of real identities or past projects of the members)
The essay:
The survey results:
I'm truly thankful to everyone who took a few minutes out of their day to contribute to this research, and I hope that my conclusions can provide some interesting answers!
For some shameless self promo, if you still enjoy filling out surveys... here's the link to my survey for metal fans, for my final project research:
For this project, the research doesn't take the form of an essay so I can't guarantee how this can be shared, but it'll still be a massive help if you can spare a couple of minutes (12 questions, majority multiple choice) to respond and/or share with some metalhead friends (oh, and maybe to check out our band's insta acc if you want to see some prog metal from a small band from liverpool)
Now, back to Sleep Token things. Since my Sleep Token survey and essay are certainly not perfect, I've decided to add some things I learned, disclaimers, acknowledgements of bias, etc. below the cut, if that sort of thing interests you
So, a few things I learned when sorting through the results of this survey:
Unless there's a good reason to include an 'other' option on a single choice question, don't. Respectfully, people love to explain and give nuance, but that is sometimes best put in a separate question as an elaboration to keep both sets of responses clear
Don't give an 'All' option on a question that's already multiple choice. It makes calculating percentages much harder since things no longer add up to 100% AND overlap with each other. It was a headache to deal with, lmao
Expanding from the first point - make a separate 'why' or 'explain your answer' question. Sure, lots of people may have said they don't care about knowing the member's identities, but if I let people explain why, I don't have to go making assumptions about what this implies about their engagement with the band
Now, onto the disclaimers
Disclaimer 1: This essay is not written at a graduate level. I am an English college student, meaning I attend a sixth form (ages 16-18), not a university, so parts of this essay (such as the Harvard referencing) may not fit expected standards for university-level essays, but it does fit the requirements for the course I'm taking
Disclaimer 2: While I'm amazed and honoured by the reach the survey had, it is still not reflective of the fanbase as a whole. The most notable bias is that the vast majority of responses came from Tumblr and Discord. This makes my survey much more accurate as a reflection of Sleep Token fans on Tumblr, and so we can choose to assume that these conclusions can apply to the entire fanbase, but must acknowledge that this could be proven false by a more broad and thorough assessment
Disclaimer 3: As the author and also a Sleep Token fan, I am biased by my own experiences and perception of the band. Having said this, marketing as a topic can swing wildly between objective and subjective. It can be statistical and broad, but also individual and personal. I think choosing this as a topic for my essay was quite ambitious, and a broader and more varied array of sources as well as a less biased perspective on the band could have yielded more accurate results overall
If you're a nerd like me and read this all the way to the end, I applaud you. Thanks again to everyone who contributed, I'd love to hear what people think, and feel free to offer further criticisms of the methods and conclusions drawn in this essay--consider it an academic discussion!

writing an A+ essay for the humanities courses by your TA, step by step:
First step is always to read your guidelines very carefully and take note of the format; this means the word limit, referencing style (MLA, APA, Chicago, Harvard), and spacing. Write down the steps your professor expects (announcing your topic, first draft, meeting etc.) and their due dates.
finding your topic

🎀 start with your syllabus, is there any topic that you'd like to delve in to more? something that catches your attention? is there anything in your notes that you'd like to explore?
🎀 alternatively, you can take a look at your reading list and take note of journals that the articles were published in. you can write down some of the journal names and read through their latest publications through your library access for inspiration.
🎀 after you have a general idea of what you'd like to research, do an initial web search, a jstor search, and a library search. skim through the abstracts and selectively read what looks interesting to have an idea on this area of study and note down the kind of questions they try to answer in these papers.
🎀 book an appointment with your professor. chances are you're already required to let them know what you'll be writing on before you hand the paper in. so go to their office hours and tell them this is what you'd like to research, even if you're kind of scared or anxious or nervous, go and talk to them. they'll ask you some questions about how you'd like to go around researching your topic, and you can tell them about the kind of questions you found that could be interesting to pursue. they can advise you on how to narrow your topic down or point you towards some useful material. with that, you can start researching!
how to research

📚 while there is no one-size-fits-all research method, something helpful to do is picking out books on the topic and going through the bibliography. don't try to read everything ever written on this topic, but look at the abstracts and key words and skim through papers & books to find things relevant to your topic.
📚 definitely look into your professor's recommendations and you can jump from there, just bibliography hop and note down page numbers and citations on your word page that you'd like to use.
📚 as you read and note quotes, after some point you'll see a pattern and a shape of an argument forming in your head. arrange your quotes into logical sections that follow that argument and read a bit more to see if you can specifically find things written about that argument you've discovered. continue noting quotes.
📚 remember that for an undergrad paper, your professor will advise you on how many references you should ideally have in your paper and you should follow that. in your quotes stage, try to shoot a little bit higher than the advised number of bibliography you're expected to have. always, ALWAYS write your citations correctly with page numbers, even if you've paraphrased their arguments for your notes.
writing your paper

🩷 now, at some point you'll need to slow down on reading and start writing. you have some writing on your word page already, and chances are, you're already sitting with an over-the-word-limit paper just containing quotes. this is ideal.
✨️ start with trying to articulate your argument, and summarising the thread you've built with quotes. what is it that you're trying to answer here? how does it relate to your material (your primary source, this could be a literary book, an archaeological evidence, a building, an object, a painting, etc)?
🩷 do a little sectioning with your quotes, label 2 or 3 sections and group the quotes this way. then, write down what this group does, what do they argue for, what is the context of this argument, and how it relates to your argument.
✨️ go through all your sections like this. you can strike down some quotes, or choose to paraphrase them (you still need to cite them when you do this). try to use quotes that communicate with each other, or build a bridge between your different quotes. Add two more sections labeled: introduction, conclusion.
🩷 in the introduction you should give a brief context of your primary, verrrry brief, and then your argument that is stated as clearly as possible. you can give a short path as to how you're going to argue and what kind of proof you have; and also write down how you've organised your paper.
✨️ in the conclusion you summarise your argument and write down the implications of this in the general context of this area of study; what does it mean for this topic in general, what impact does it have, does your argument fill a gap, does it contradict the general consensus, does it prove that the general view is correct? you could write down what could be further studied for extra flair.
editing
🪸 check your citations, references, and bibliography. check them again. are they in the correct format? do they include all the information you need to provide? is it alphabetical? have you correctly gave references everywhere you needed to do and did not accidentally plagiarise anything?
🪸 check your spelling and grammar. try to do this about three days after you've written the paper. if you're pressed for time, have someone else read it for you. you will not be able to catch your grammatical errors after writing it because you become blind to your own writing after a certain time. if you want that A, the paper should look polished and have the correct formatting.
🪸 make sure your name is on the paper so you'll see it marked with an A+. Well done!

Project Proposal Guidance
After we decide on an overall theme (We will do so, after showing the group pitches in two weeks time) It will be time to write your Project Proposal Please make sure you are clear about the theme idea, the project dates and have completed the first two weeks WIX blogging and weekly evaluations before you submit your project proposal
The deadline for your first draft is Monday 7th of April at 5pm
The UAL guidance is on your WIX site. Do not delete the guidance yet as you will need it. Write underneath each section so that you can keep referring to it as you write. (Don’t forget to publish it when you are done)
You can see that there is a word count. This is because it is very hard to keep it down to that number of words and it therefore forces you to work out what is most important to say and become very clear and precise in your thinking. Don’t worry about the word count too much on your first try at this. I will tell you if it’s too long.
Your proposal will be graded but I will help you with it before it is finalised (and you will have guidance over Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th of April)
The guidance on your WIX site is written by UAL (the awarding body) so I have added little bit here about each section to help to relate it to our project.
Rationale Your proposal is about you. How you have grown on the course over all the previous performances, (as performer and audience) recordings, lectures and projects. Everyone is different in terms of level, instruments, experience and confidence. It is also about your intentions. How does your experiences so far, effect what you want to do next. (You will have already set out some intentions in your personal manifesto)
Project Concept Show your understanding of the theme that we have come up with together, what direction you can now see the research going, what you will need to get the most out of this project and how you can develop your passions within it. We can state what we know, such as how we intend to be performing together live for this concept in front of an audience, with the use of our own lighting states and video projection
Evaluation How exactly you plan on gathering the evidence, keep ongoing reflections, work on collaboration skills and avoid discipline issues when working with other people
Project action plan and timetable
How you will take responsibility for the organisational issues that come with the project. Managing your time, planning ahead and taking responsibility for looking after the intentions of the whole company
Proposed research sources and bibliography (Harvard Format) Leave this part for now. I will be giving separate guidance about Harvard referencing when we return after Easter
(You may want to look through the project brief again before you start the proposal)

quarterly book review: first quarter
since 2024 began, i have read about 4 books (5 if you count one started in december and finished in january) and i’m reviewing the books I’ve read through january & feburary. the reviews will be in chronological order and the ratings are from goodreads.
the idiot by elif batuman: 5 stars
elif batuman is a masterful writer. the way she is able to articulate selin’s thoughts and philosophies authentically whilst using dialogue to illustrate humor and critique of her thoughts, too. selin is an incredibly relatable character and her composition of her experiences resonate with me too, since we have similar lives and reactions. i also love the setting of harvard in the late 90s, referencing classic intellectualism adds to the introspection of selin and the perceived intelligence of those around her, or how she perceives intellect anyway. both the setting and the stream of consciousness makes up for the fact that the story doesn’t really have an innate plot to it until later on, the thoughts add the development.
jazz by toni morrison: 5 stars
the plot of this book is so enticing and the unknown narrator’s commentary contributes to a lot of the foreshadowing and storytelling aspects of the novel. the pov’s of the main characters joe, violet, dorcas, and later felice add to the overall narrative as opposed to takes away from it, which can happen. the social themes of race, gender, mental health, and the dynamics it creates really establishes this book in a way as a social commentary for black feminist literary criticism and sociological theory. the description of daily life and the characters actions really bring a magnetic quality to the scenes and development of the plot. the flashbacks are done really well too.
the bell jar by sylvia plath: 4 stars
sylvia plath has this way of saying exactly what people feel, a true gift of words. the fig tree metaphor in the beginning of the book is a sneak peek into to her writing style seen in her poetry and the unabridged journals. the middle to end portion is a little bit drawn out and plath should’ve utilized the setting of a new england college when esther returns from new york. it's status as an iconic work in the feminist literature space is taken into account when reading as you analyze every word on a page in hopes of figuring out how it got there.
the catcher in the rye by j.d salinger: 5 stars
holden caulfield is incredibly relatable and a sentiment to teenage angst and its place in a society. the character holden is worth the 5 stars because it portrays teen angst in a honest yet critical way that is hard to do as an adult writer.
sula by toni morrison: 4 stars
i consider sula and the bell jar to be literary kindred spirits. this book truly does speak to black feminist literary criticism and is considered an iconic piece in the feminist literature landscape despite it being a bit difficult to comprehend. the depictions of nel and sula as children was the best part of the story, since it shows the message of female friendship and camaraderie among women and how such bonds can be tested and broken by men and the patriarchy. sula is also an incredibly powerful piece in terms of mental health, and kind of provides a guide through the characters actions on how not to deal with it. overall, sula’s depictions of feminism, patriarchy, love and marriage, and mental health are a testament of the sociopolitical climate in black america in both morrison’s time and the present.

What is being ignored by the mainstream media are the dangers facing the global economy
Dec 03, 2024
On the economic front, it is more of the same, but just a different day.
The U.S. equities keep riding high following the re-election of Donald Trump.
While there are fears that his tariff policies will have negative effects on the economy, at this point, it is a guessing game.
The same with his plans to cut taxes. Will the richest Americans reap the biggest rewards like his last cuts in 2017, or will We the People of Slavelandia get a cut?
What is being ignored by the mainstream media are the dangers facing the global economy.
Economies were artificially propped up with trillions of dollars in fake money backed by nothing and printed on nothing, plus negative and zero interest rate policies, are now suffering from the draconian COVID lockdown policies imposed by politicians that destroyed the lives and livelihoods of billions of people across the planet.
We continue to report on the looming Office Building Bust that will cause Banks to Go Bust.
Need more proof?
The recent four-week office occupancy rate of the largest 10 cities in the U.S. was, according to Kastle Systems, down to 40.6 percent. Much of the decline was a result of the Thanksgiving holiday, but overall, for the year, the average is around 50 percent, while the vacancy rate, meaning empty office buildings, is at around 20 percent.
As of last week, the delinquency rates on commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) was at 10.4 percent, up one percent in November, hitting its fastest spike in two years... the depth of the COVID War lockdowns.
According to Trepp data, the current CMBS delinquency rate is just .3 percent below the 10.7 percent spike during the Panic of ’08 Great Recession.
Illustrating the danger ahead, but again banned by the mainstream media, was the 31 October 2024 article in Wall Street on Parade, New York Fed Report: 27 Percent of Bank Capital Is “Extend and Pretend” Commercial Real Estate Loans... which in part states the dire office building crisis as a result of the vacancy rates and how it is being covered up.
They quote a paper written by Matteo Crosignani, financial research advisor at the New York Fed, and Saketh Prazad, a former research analyst at the New York Fed who is now a doctoral student in the Business Economics program at the Harvard Business School who wrote:
“In this paper, using detailed supervisory data, we document that banks have ‘extended-and-pretended’ their distressed CRE mortgages in the post-pandemic period to delay the recognition of losses. Banks with weaker marked-to-market capital—largely due to losses in their securities portfolio since 2022:Q1—have extended the maturity of their impaired CRE mortgages coming due and pretended that such credit provision was not as distressed to avoid further depleting their capital. The resulting limited number of loan defaults hindered the reallocation of capital, crowding out the origination of both CRE mortgages and loans to firms. The maturity extensions granted by banks also fueled the volume of CRE mortgages set to mature in the near term—a ‘maturity wall’ with the associated risk of large losses materializing in a short period of time.”
One of the scariest potential outcomes referenced by the authors is their so-called “maturity wall” when the debt bombs come due and losses pile up suddenly. The authors write this:
“…we document that banks’ extend-and-pretend has led to an ever-expanding ‘maturity wall’, namely a rapidly increasing volume of CRE loans set to mature in the near term. As of 2023:Q4, CRE mortgages coming due within three years represent 27% of bank marked-to-market capital, up 11 percentage points from 2020:Q4—and CRE mortgages coming due within five years represent 40% of bank marked-to-market capital. We show (i) that weakly capitalized banks drive this expansion, consistent with their extend-and-pretend behavior, and (ii) that the maturity wall represents a sizable 16% of the aggregate CRE debt held by the banking sector as of 2023:Q4.
“Taken together, our results highlight the costs of banks’ extend-and-pretend behavior. In the short term, the resulting credit misallocation might slow down the capital reallocation needed to sustain the transition of real estate markets to the post-pandemic equilibrium—for example supporting the conversion of office space into residential units and recreational spaces in large urban areas. In the medium term, the delayed recognition of losses exposes banks (and all other holders of CRE debt) to sudden large losses which can be exacerbated by fire sales dynamics and bankruptcy courts congestion.”
Further illustrating the reality of the looming CMBS debt bomb, today Wall Street on Parade noted that:
“Life insurers continued to allocate a substantial percentage of assets to risky and less liquid instruments, such as leveraged loans, collateralized loan obligations (CLOs), high-yield corporate bonds, privately placed corporate bonds, and alternative investments. Moreover, life insurance companies have material direct exposures to commercial mortgages and are large holders of commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS). This exposure to illiquid and risky assets makes life insurers vulnerable to an array of adverse shocks, including that of an economic downturn or of a significant further deterioration of the CRE [commercial real estate] market.”
TREND FORECAST: Yes, the significant further deterioration of the CRE [commercial real estate] market,” that so few are talking about... a mega trend we warned about when we had forecast the Office Building Bust and its socioeconomic implications.

hi there ✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧
I've been getting into fence recently, and got given the novels for my birthday today, and I was wondering...where do they fit into the canon of the comics, and the reading order?
also, follow up....are they going to ruin the comics for me, because I've read a lot about mischaracterisation, ableism, racism and worse in them recently?
Hey friend! Welcome to Fence!! And of course happy birthday—I hope it’s been a great one! 💜
So the novels exist in a weird pseudo-canon black hole. I honestly believe they were supposed to be more canon than they ended up being but either Pacat realized that he let the author of the novels, Sarah Rees Brennan, get ahead of the story in his excitement OR because of fan reaction/further consideration after Disarmed came out, Pacat ended up backtracking. The novels are meant to take place after RIVALS (volume 4) and before RISE (volume 5) and cover a couple of weeks in that stretch of time. However, RISE picked up right after RIVALS with no hint of any adventures having happened. The novels are not referenced at all—the biggest nod to it is Seiji wearing a watch. That’s the only acknowledgment of it at all, which is strange because some pretty substantial developments happen in the duology that could not be ignored. That is to say, RISE continues to develop something the novels conclusively resolved with no explanation other than the events of the novels simply never happened. Pacat has said that the novels are 80% canon, but the events clearly aren’t included in that 80%—the characterization from the novels does carry over to the comics, so if you notice a difference between volume 3 and RIVALS (volume 4), that’s where that came from. (Striking Distance was written before and during RIVALS (volume 4), despite being published after it.)
The novels are completely unnecessary to read and irrelevant to the plot. So if you read the novels, it’s for your own enjoyment. You probably came to them the same way most Fence comic fans did—through a love of the story and the characters and a desire to spend more time with them. Some people loved the novels, finding them fun and easy read. Some people love what SRB did with the characters. That’s cool for them, but fair warning that the characters are one dimensional caricatures of what they were in the comic and are painfully stupid. Like they are emotionally and cognitively at the level I’d expect to see in 8 year olds. The way Nick is treated by the narrative is incredibly belittling of poor people, treating them like idiots who don’t know anything and are unable to solve their own problems—but good thing the rich people are there to take care of him! Seiji’s obviously written as autistic in the worst way. As someone that’s autistic, I cannot articulate in a way allistic people can understand how much it hurts to have your special interest betray and mock you/what you are. Seiji is like is Sheldon Cooper and Miranda Sings had a child. And the narrative thinks it’s god’s gift to autistic people for it. His entire personality is stripped away and replaced with the author’s idea of autism and it sucks. SRB knows so little about the characters that she looked at Eugene, saw a brown kid, and labeled him Mexican through implication—also had him not understand racism against Asian people despite being Asian too. She implied that Nick’s gay as well rather than his canonical bisexual. Aiden’s honestly bordering on abusive toward Harvard during Striking Distance, and Williams has a really fucked up interaction with some of the boys that’s literally sexual harassment even though it wasn’t framed that way by the narrative. Beyond that, in my opinion, SRB doesn’t know how to write chemistry and in fact turned me heavily off Aiden and Harvard as characters as a ship. She also dented Nichoji’s appeal for me when I consider her characterization. So you’re not even getting any good moments there for the trouble imo.
If I were you, I’d skip the novels. They don’t add anything to canon and you’re not missing any context by ditching them. And you’d be saving yourself a lot of cringing, discomfort, and anger of varying degrees depending on where you fall on things. If you want specifics, please feel free to message me on or off anon! I tried to be as spoiler free as possible here haha
If you want to explore more on your own, you can check out some other asks/thoughts! (These all contain novel spoilers)
My full review of Disarmed
Autism representation in Seiji
Seiji in general
Eugene
Eugesse as a concept in Disarmed
Eugesse interactions in Disarmed
Nick's bisexuality
Coach Williams and sexual harassment
I also found an ask from someone saying they regret reading the novels while going through my posts to compile this list, which I thought was too hilariously on-topic to omit
(PS a birthday song for you to enjoy uwu)

Notes from 'Using Sources and Referencing' WISER Workshop
Aims:
To look at how referencing can support your argument
To recap Harvard referencing and how to cite unusual resources
To look at how to use sources an apply the TEEEL structure to writing paragraph
Essay Writing Framework:
Common problems
• The solipsistic voice – based on opinion and not backed up with proven data
• Unaverred voice - provides a ‘patchwork’ of summaries but the student doesn't give their own views
• Unattributed voice – uses other people’s ideas as if they were their own
Step 1: Research
Read widely about your subject. Identify different perspectives and potentially use these alternatives views to structure your essay/argument.
Academic arguments are developed with reference to the existing literature about your subject.
Consider/address what others say before putting forward your own viewpoint.
Reading doesn’t involve absorbing all of the facts but trying to identify an author’s position or argument. Look carefully at the abstract, introduction, and conclusion.
Step 2: Identify Themes
As you read, consider patterns or themes in the writing and arguments made by different authors, and Identify the topics or ideas that often appear. You might ask:
What are the main arguments on the topic?
Is there agreement or disagreement on the subject or parts of the subject?
Are some arguments common or fashionable?
What are the main strengths and weaknesses of the major arguments you encounter?
Do you agree or disagree with the arguments you encounter?
Step 3: Build an Argument
Summarise the argument quickly in a couple of sentences – this will be the base of the introduction and conclusion.
Reflect on the difference between fact and opinion. Arguments are not simply a list of facts on the topic but tend to involve a writer introducing their own perspective/s.
Be precise. It is usually better to intervene with or address a single aspect of the question rather than trying to address everything.
Referencing and using sources
Evaluating sources
Critical reading involves being active, not passive, readers need to consider their ability to ask questions about the texts and resources they read.
When reading a text, consider:
Who
What
Where
When
How
Why
Consider: How does this text relate to my question, task, or case study?
Referencing: How do we do it?
Direct quotation Use the original words from the text and use quotation marks
Here you take the words and ideas of another, directly, to support your own argument.
Paraphrase Re-phrase the words/ideas of others in your own words
Here you take the words and ideas of another, indirectly, to support your own argument.
Summary Represent the words/ideas of others in your own words in a shorter, summarised version
A paraphrase/summary reference should not...
Copy the original text word for word
Use words/phrases from the original text
Copy the sentence structure of the original text
Use synonyms that change the original meaning
Steps to take when paraphrasing...
Read the source
Understand the source
Put away the source
Make a simple list of the main points you remember from the source
Re-read the source quickly to make sure you have included all the important points
Put away the source again
Join together the points from your list into full sentences, using suitable grammar to make a continuous piece of writing
Re-read your paraphrase, correcting the grammar and organisation if necessary.
Check your paraphrase against the source. Is it a good paraphrase?
Reference list:
Only reference sources that you have used in the main body of the essay
Present the references in alphabetical order *See Cite Them Right
Additional info:
(n.d.) = no date
(Anon) = No author
(et al.) = and other authors. Used when referring a source with more than three authors in the main body of the essay, e.g. (Smith et al., 2000)
(cf.) = compare (main body of the essay, only)
When referring to more than one work by a given author and the sources share the same year of publication: (Smith 2000a), (Smith 2000b)
‘... = ellipsis (used at the beginning of the quotation or the end)
[...] = used to signify that you have changed part of the quotation, or have added your own words
Structure and using sources
Critical Writing
Descriptive writing: Says what happened; reports on findings; explains a theory or idea; gives information; lists details; notes methods used; provides a chronology or timeline of key events; outlines the main points of the key studies.
Analytical Writing: Applies ideas to a different setting; evaluates strengths and weaknesses; draws conclusions; determines the validity of different parts of a study; identifies significance; advances ideas/hypotheses; justifies a selection of different options.
Synthesising
This means bringing together different ideas from the literature along with your own evaluation.
Avoid:
Reproducing and just summarising.
Providing evidence with no evaluation
Listing all the books/articles you have read and writing a bit about each one
Making the same points
Writing Paragraphs (TEEEL)
1. Topic sentence:
Expresses the main idea for that paragraph
2. Explain or define any abstract or problematic terms/theories/models:
Clarifies the topic sentence
3. Show your Evidence:
Supports the main idea or argument in the topic sentence
4. Evaluate the evidence:
Shows how it supports or develops the main idea. (If appropriate), mention other evidence (examples/studies/experiments/interpretations) to widen the discussion
5. Link and Conclude:
Explains the consequences or implications
Show the development of the argument
Links to the main idea in the next paragraph
Shows the link with the title or section (in the first and last paragraphs of an essay)
Building an argument in your own writing
What is your argument/Stance?
Essay Question - Argument - Topic Sentence - Sources
Steps 3 and 4 may be repeated within the paragraph

Looking for a Reliable Essay Writer in the UK? Here's What You Need to Know
In today’s academic landscape, students are juggling more responsibilities than ever — from attending lectures and managing part-time jobs to keeping up with family, health, and social commitments. Amidst all this, crafting high-quality essays on time can become a real challenge. That’s where hiring a professional essay writer comes into play.
But before you type "write my essay" into Google, it’s important to understand what makes a good essay writer, what to look for in a service, and how to make sure you’re getting original, high-quality work.
✅ Why Students Choose Essay Writers
Students often feel guilty about seeking help — but the truth is, getting essay support isn't cheating, it’s smart strategy. Here’s why thousands of UK students turn to essay writing services:
Time Constraints: Many students manage jobs or personal responsibilities.
Language Barriers: ESL students sometimes struggle with academic English.
Complex Topics: Subjects like law, medicine, or economics demand precise academic writing.
Fear of Plagiarism: A trusted essay writer ensures originality and proper referencing.
✍️ What Makes a Great Essay Writer?
A professional essay writer is more than someone who can put words together. They bring:
Subject Matter Expertise: Knowledge in your specific academic field
Research Skills: Ability to locate and cite reliable, up-to-date academic sources
Formatting Knowledge: Familiarity with APA, MLA, Harvard, and other referencing styles
Creativity and Clarity: Writing that is engaging yet academically sound
Deadline Reliability: Delivering high-quality work, even under pressure
🛡️ Avoiding Risks: What to Watch Out For
Unfortunately, the internet is full of low-quality or even fraudulent essay services. Here's what you need to avoid:
No Transparency: Vague pricing or hidden fees
Plagiarized Content: Services that copy or recycle work
Missed Deadlines: Submissions that arrive late or incomplete
No Revisions: Lack of post-delivery support

How IB Tutoring Prepares Students for Top Global Universities
How IB Tutoring Prepares Students for Top Global Universities
The International Baccalaureate (IB) is not just another high school diploma—it’s a launchpad to the world’s best universities. Its holistic and rigorous structure is designed to develop students into well-rounded, critical thinkers who can thrive in competitive academic environments.
But excelling in IB—and leveraging it for university admissions—requires more than just classroom learning. That’s why more students and families are turning to IB tutoring to help bridge the gap between strong school performance and successful global university admissions.
In this article, we explore how platforms like CourseLeap’s IB Tutoring help students go beyond subject success and prepare strategically for top-tier universities worldwide.
1. Mastery of Academic Skills Needed for University
University success requires a set of core academic skills:
Independent research
Structured academic writing
Time and stress management
Analytical and critical thinking
Self-directed learning
The IB promotes these through its curriculum, but IB tutoring reinforces and deepens them, especially through one-on-one mentorship.
At CourseLeap, tutors work with students on:
Extended Essay (EE) research and writing
High-level subject exploration in HL courses
Academic presentation skills through TOK
Structuring arguments and refining thought processes
These are directly transferable to first-year university assignments, seminars, and independent study.
2. Strong IB Scores Matter in Competitive Admissions
Universities like Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Stanford, and many others give great weight to IB predicted and final scores.
Examples:
Oxford typically requires a 38–40 score, with 6s and 7s in HL subjects.
Ivy League universities value strong EE and TOK performance.
Top Canadian and Singaporean universities use predicted IB scores directly for admission offers.
IB tutoring helps students:
Strategically plan their subject combinations
Improve performance in HL subjects (which carry more weight)
Score higher in IA, EE, and TOK, all of which boost final points
Avoid common mistakes that lead to lost marks
Tutors also help interpret and target subject-specific grade boundaries, improving student chances of meeting offer conditions.
3. Subject Guidance Aligned with University Goals
Choosing the right subjects in IB is crucial—not just for performance, but for aligning with future degree programs.
Tutors help students:
Choose between Math AA and AI based on STEM or non-STEM pathways
Understand if HL Chemistry is needed for Medicine
Align Business Management or Economics HL with finance or economics majors
Ensure their Extended Essay supports intended university interests
This alignment not only strengthens applications—it also demonstrates clarity of purpose to admissions committees.
4. IB Core Components Build Strong Applications
The EE, TOK, and CAS are not just IB formalities—they are often referenced in university applications, interviews, and personal statements.
IB tutors provide:
EE mentorship that builds research and writing portfolios
TOK support that develops philosophical reasoning and reflection
CAS planning to help students turn experiences into essays
At CourseLeap, many students use their EE or CAS project to:
Write personal statements
Apply for scholarships
Prepare for Oxbridge and Ivy League interviews
5. Admissions & Interview Preparation
Many IB tutoring programs (including CourseLeap) now offer university readiness coaching, including:
Personal statement brainstorming and editing
Subject-specific interview coaching (esp. for Oxbridge/UK)
Essay-based admissions test practice (e.g., TSA, BMAT, LNAT)
Academic writing and communication coaching
This integrated support ensures IB students present themselves with clarity, confidence, and competitiveness.
6. Confidence in Global Academic Environments
Studying abroad is not just about grades—it’s about confidence. IB tutoring helps students:
Practice university-style seminars and discussions
Learn independent learning strategies
Build time management systems for heavy workloads
Develop soft skills like communication, initiative, and leadership
These are exactly the traits admissions officers and professors look for in international students.
